Dinner in Little Italy

June 11, 2012

Hello, there! How was your weekend? I spent most of it lounging around which was thoroughly enjoyed. While relaxing, I somehow got sucked into a Bridezillas marathon. That show i

s addicting!

Anywho, I wanted to save the favorite part of my trip to San Diego for last. Our hotel was in walking distance of San Diego’s Little Italy. I actually didn’t know that such a place existed in San Diego so I was eagerly awaiting the dinner we had planned. Swanky boyfriend found a restaurant that got great reviews on Yelp. Boy, did he do good.

Our date night was right down the street from Date. Smile

IMG_0217

Little Italy was so quaint. I loved all the restaurants and store fronts.

IMG_0222

Buon Appetito was the restaurant the boy had chosen for our evening in Little Italy. The weather was beautiful so we sat at a small table outside (with heating lamps for those people like me who are cold easily).

IMG_0223

I had briefly looked online at menu options but when I started perusing the menu, my indecisiveness kicked in. There were so many delicious options to choose.

IMG_0228

While deciding on an entrée, the server brought out bread served with a delicious marinara dipping sauce. The boy and I both agreed the marinara was such a nice change from either butter or olive oil and vinegar. After a slice, I realized that I needed to save room for my entrée.

Before dining, we had called the restaurant to see about a corking fee (which was only 15 bucks). The boy brought a bottle of cabernet sauvignon to enjoy with our meal. It was one of the wines we shared on our first date and he remembered how much I liked it.

IMG_0230

Although I am no wine connoisseur, this wine is fantastic and very smooth. It was a really sweet thought too.

IMG_0245

Alright, let’s get to the dinner!!

This food was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! Since we wanted to sample a few items, we started off with two appetizers to share.

The caprese was first among our choices. Give me fresh mozzarella any day!

Fresh mozzarella layered with basil and tomatoes drizzled with oregano infused olive oil and topped with sliced red onions

IMG_0232

Although this is a traditional dish, I loved that they added a personal touch with the roasted peppers and red onion.

IMG_0231

Leave it to me to choose a cheesy and creamy appetizer. Since trying my hand at making polenta at home a while back, I was not convinced I really liked it. This Polenta All Bosciaiola had such unique flavors combined with the polenta that I had to give it a try.

Grilled polenta served with wild mushrooms sautéed with olive oil, garlic and parsley and topped with Gorgonzola cheese

IMG_0233

The creamy texture of the polenta pairs so well with the chewy mushrooms and pungent gorgonzola. This appetizer was outstanding. I can’t wait to try and recreate this at home. Polenta, you will get another chance in my kitchen for sure.

IMG_0234

Clearly, we hated it.

IMG_0244

The boy and I got all gussied up for our last night out. I just love date night!

IMG_0247

Although going back and forth, I finally decided on one of their dinner specials for my entrée, Gnocchi con Carciofi.

Potato dumpling tossed in pesto cream sauce with artichoke and chopped tomatoes

IMG_0248

These soft potato pillows literally just melted in my mouth.

IMG_0256

I have never had a creamy pesto before but this sauce was lick-your-plate-clean delicious. The bites of tomato and artichokes added not only more flavor but different textures to the softness of the gnocchi. I am so glad I ordered this.

IMG_0255

The boy was also in love with his dish. He is quite the foodie like me. He was very happy with his entrée choice, Fusilli al Ragu’ d’ Anatra.

IMG_0251

We left Buon Appetito already planning our next trip back.

IMG_0260

To walk off our meals (which we had to box up), we walked up and down Little Italy and check out the sights. I loved that the street was lined with lights. It added an Italian touch, in my opinion.

IMG_0259

There were little reminders of Italy wherever you would look. How beautiful is this electrical box.

IMG_0261

I loved getting a little taste of Italy while in San Diego. If you ever are in Downtown San Diego, I highly recommend visiting.

If you missed my last two San Diego posts, you can catch up on them:

Tony’s Half Marathon, Sea World, and Seaport Village

Staying at the Porto Vista, Seaport Village, and Mission Beach

Thanks for reading! Since I am officially recovered from my vacation (don’t you feel like you need a vacation from a vacation), I am getting back on track tomorrow with gym time, cooking, and cleaning.

How was your weekend? Have you ever been to a Little Italy?

Just catching up on all your San Diego posts-so glad you had such a fun time! Next time you’ll have to head up North a little bit to my neck of the woods :-) {Racing season is coming up!!} I think I have eaten lunch at Buon Appetito before, and I remember it being quite yummy. That polenta looks especially amazing! You really can’t go wrong with any of the restaurants in Little Italy :-)

What a great date night! Love that the boy brought a bottle of the wine that you had shared on your first date! How romantic! :)

All the food looks great! I used to make a similar polenta dish (I’m sure my version wasn’t quite as good!) but have not made it in a long time. I’ll have to put it on the menu again!

Have fun getting back on track tomorrow and have a great week!

I’m from San Diego! I moved to Vegas when I was 9 (that basically means I’m a LV native, lol). I need to catch up on reading your other SD posts (this was the first of the bunch I’ve read). I’m so embarrassed to say that I have not been to Little Italy in SD. We have family down in SD that I don’t visit enough. We’ll have to check this restaurant out next time. The food looks amazing. I love, love, love gnocchi!

I know what you mean. I have been going to SD since I was little and never even knew Little Italy existed!! So glad to have discovered it! :)

What a fabulously fun and romantic date night in Little Italy! Your gnocchi looks SO SO good! Creamy pesto is one definitely my favorite Italian sauce because it combines my two of my very favorites: pesto and alfredo. Yum. And I’m so glad you enjoyed the polenta; I make it on a regular basis and love it for its versatility. Plus, the tubes you can buy at Trader Joes are a fantastic meal base!

I have been to SD a handful of times, but I never knew this place existed either! It looks amazing! I am obsessed with Italian food. I am in awe of your restraint for the bread, I would eat that whole loaf..ask for another..and then proceed to eat my meal and feel like a whale after a few bites. Bread is my weakness! YAY for date night!

That sounds amazing! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Gnocchi. Its one of the dishes I almost always get if it’s on a menu. I had a great experience in little Italy in NY, went to a cool restaurant where there wasn’t even a menu, they just bring out dishes for you.

That sounds so neat!!! I have only had gnocchi a couple times and this just blew every time out of the water. :)

OMG, good gnocchi is something to behold – I once got a giant plate at a restaurant – I told my husband “there is so much food I’ll probably make two lunches out of it!” Nope, I kept eating because they were delicious pillows of goodness! :D

Love the pic of you two!

Everything looks delicious! I’ve never been to a restaurant that offered marinara as a dipping sauce for bread, but I wish more did that!

When I saw the gnocchi that you ordered, I thought to myself, “Oh I definitely would have ordered that, too.” And then I saw what the boyfriend got & thought the same thing. I can see why you had a hard time picking something!
