Ski and Snow Vegas Style

February 8, 2012

I can’t wait to share with you all my first snowboarding experience!

But first, the 4 winners of Driscoll’s berry giveaway are:

#34 Lisa

#11 Courtney @ The Little Food Court

#33 Kristin

#28 Tanya @ Dine, Dash, and Deadlift

Congrats!   I will be in touch with you!

So back to my weekend…when people think Vegas, I don’t think they often picture snow.

IMG_8341

Well, we get snow that’s for sure!  Up in Lee Canyon about 30 miles from downtown Vegas is where I spent my Saturday.  The folks at Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort and Forte Creative Media provided my Vegas blogger friends and I a day to explore all of what Lee Canyon has to offer.

IMG_8342

Lee Canyon gets an annual snow fall of 140 inches.  And bonus, 300 or more days of sunshine!

IMG_8343

The views at Lee Canyon are just breathtaking!

IMG_8380

When we all arrived, we got suited up!  I needed everything!  Shoes, pants, and a board!

IMG_8347

If you saw board 144 out on the slopes, you will know she was the the girl on her bum most the day. Winking smile

IMG_8352

But she looked cool doing it, no?  I actually felt like a snowman I had so many layers on.  But warm I was.

IMG_8353

After we were suited up and ready to go, the group went over future plans for LV Ski and Snowboarding Resort.

IMG_8355

While sipping a hot cup of cocoa.  Life is pretty rough. Smile

IMG_8357

The provided a fabulous press kit to all the bloggers.  The Master Development Plan will include a total of 50 trails and 10 lifts total once complete.

IMG_8359

This plan also includes upgrades in equipment and a larger area for seating.

IMG_8362

Although they offer quite a few slopes, this beginner stuck to the easy stuff.

IMG_8345

Here we are!  All ready to hit the slopes!

IMG_8361

Among the bloggers, we had groups of skiers and snowboarders.

IMG_8373

It was pretty busy being a Saturday and all, but there was plenty of room for me to fall on my butt snowboard.

IMG_8372

We headed over for our snowboarding lesson.  Our instructor, Ray, was awesome!

IMG_8381

He first when over the basics and eventually tried snowboarding with only one foot strapped in.

IMG_8382

Granted I fell many times, I started to get the hang of it.  I even managed to do a couple ‘S’ loops.

IMG_8387

We had beautiful views from the lift.  We lucked out with amazing weather too!  I actually had to take off my jacket while on the slopes, I was breaking quite the sweat.

IMG_8385

A huge success was not managing to fall while getting off the lift…finally got it down after the third try.

IMG_8383

It was such a fun time!!  I can’t wait to go up to Lee Canyon again soon!

I have tried skiing and snowboarding and like boarding way better even though I also spend most the day on my bum!

Yayy! Excited I won some Driscoll’s coupons!! Woo! Thanks! However, I am MORE excited that you went snowboarding and had a good time! I am a skier, although I did learn how to snowboard just for kicks years ago. I taught skiing all through high school and college and I just love when new people fall in love the skiing/snowboarding and being out in the mountains. If you are ever in New England in Dec/Jan let me know because chances are I will be in NH skiing then! :-)

I prefer skiing, but after years of lessons growing up I still like to stick to the less scary “blue diamond hills.” Don’t worry about being on your bum, because I have: ran into the little house by the lift, gotten knocked over by the lift coming around, lost a ski and lost a pole on the lift.

I have went skiing once and seemed to do a bit better.
Thankfully they made sure to warn us to duck when the lift comes around. I think being petrified of that happening made me remember!
I did manage to run into a few people throughout the day though. ;)

I had so much fun, Kristen! You were way braver than I was. The lift terrified me, I must admit. I went flying off! Amy’s comments don’t help! Lol.

What a fun day! And, yes, I knew Vegas got snow -I remember driving their for work (over 10 years ago) and it snowed-but I had no idea about the ski and snow resort being so close. How cool is that! I love, love, love to ski. We usually go to Mammoth a few times every year, but they’ve gotten very little snow this year which is rare…maybe we’ll have to go to Vegas instead! :-)

Yep, never ever think of snow and Vegas in the same sentence. Looks gorgeous and it looks like you had a blast. I’ve never been snowboarding or even snow skiing. Now water skiing….all over that ;-)

I’d love to try water skiing or wake boarding. Always looks like such a blast! :)

So happy to hear you had fun! I bet it was a nice break from the craziness of work/masters.

Snowboarding can be quite the workout! I always start with a billion layers and start peeling them off as the day goes on.

It really was!! I was so sore the next day! :)

How beautiful! Now I really need to sneak in Craig’s luggage to come visit!

I have never gone skiing or snowboarding but I REALLY want to try it! That sounds like the perfect place to do it. Although I think I’d be deathly afraid of getting on and off the lift – I’ve tried it in the summer without skis on and was terrified. I also don’t understand how you don’t crash into the trees while skiing because I keep imagining it to be just like sledding, but standing up :-)

It looks like a fun time!! But chairlifts totally scare me!!

Reply

Swanky Dietitian February 9, 2012 at 5:41 pm

I was freaking out a bit when riding the chair lift..especially with the heavy snowboard at your feet.

Wow, I had no idea you could ski so close to LV! Looks like you had much more success than I did the first/last time I tried snowboarding haha. I prefer skiing..

What a fun time!! While I am not sure I’d ever want to downhill ski or snow board, I wouldn’t mind the ski lift – the views are stunning!

Then I would have a hot cocoa with whip cream. :D
