Pizza for Breakfast

November 16, 2011

Hello, hello!  I’m almost done with the final book in the Hunger Games series.  It was so difficult to put down last night, but I needed to get sleep at some point.  Winking smile

Book club meets this Sunday and we plan to discuss this final book, Mockingjay.  As if it couldn’t get any better, the official Hunger Games trailer was released yesterday.  It’s amazing!!  Can’t believe I have to wait until March.  Anyone else as excited as me?

Today’s recipe might possibly be in my top 5 favorite recipes I’ve ever made on my blog.  No joke, it was that good.  It’s pretty hard to go wrong when you’re making pizza for breakfast though.  Smile

Some mornings you just crave a savory breakfast.  For times that you do, this recipe can be your go-to.  I eliminated the bacon since I don’t eat much of it anymore.  I could see how it would really enhance the flavor of this dish though.  I also broke up the dough, making a mini version of the real thing.

Breakfast Pizza (courtesy of Smitten Kitchen)

Ingredients:

  • 1 package whole wheat dough
  • Kosher salt
  • 3 strips bacon
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella
  • 3 large eggs
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon minced flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 tablespoon minced chives
  • 1 scallion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 shallot, minced

Directions:

Generously dust the surface of a pizza peel or large inverted sheet pan with flour and place the stretched dough on it.  Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Sprinkle the dough with half of the Parmesan, mozzarella and bacon.

IMG_6618

Crack eggs over the top and season with salt and pepper.

IMG_6619

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, rotating after 5 minutes.  When the crust is golden, the cheese is melted and the egg yolks are cooked, remove from oven.  Sprinkle with seasonings (parsley, chives, shallots).

Let cool for 2 minutes, slice and serve immediately.

IMG_6639

This recipe couldn’t have come out any better.  The saltiness from the cheese combined with the soft and chewy dough made an incredible match.

Feel free to pull off a piece of dough to soak up the dippy eggs.

I immediately called my mom, as I was continuing to eat of course, exclaiming just how incredible this pizza was.  So there you have it…a call-your-relative-this-breakfast-is-so-delicious-recipe!

IMG_6643

This breakfast would work great for a Sunday morning since it is hearty, yet easy to put together.  The only problem is that you may not want to share. Winking smile

With that, I am off to (hopefully) finish up the rest of the book tonight!  Can we say obsessed!?!  Thanks for reading!

Definitely bookmarking this recipe. My mouth is watering just looking at it. So bready and cheesy and eggy!!

I keep hearing about how good “The Hunger Games” are, and after watching the trailer, I FINALLY started reading it! I brought the book to the gym earlier–definitely made my workout go by faster!

Breakfast looks awesome! I am thinking I have to read The Hunger Games. All I am reading/hearing about is how awesome the trailer is and I have no idea what the book is even about!

I am in desperate need of a good book. I’ve just not made it to the bookstore lately. Re-ready Vampire Lestat right now out of desperation.

Otto Restaurant here in nyc makes an arugula, guanciale, and over easy egg pizza. I never thought to make one at home. I am thinking about it now. Hard.

I’m super excited for the Hunger Games movie! And that pizza looks delicious?! Question though… it probably creates leftovers? How would those reheat?

Reply

Swanky Dietitian November 16, 2011 at 6:27 pm

That’s what I was thinking. That’s why I made a smaller one. I’m guessing the egg would just be a bit more cooked. I’m sure it probably would still taste good. :)

I’ve eaten left over pizza for breakfast before. That counts, right?? :-)

I LOVE to read good books. However, I have a strict, no books policy unless traveling without pressing work to be accomplished….and therefore, hardly read for fun anymore. Kind of sad…but my eyes can only take so much reading and thanks to my decision to stay in school FOREVER (or at least that is how it feels)…no reading besides journal articles and textbooks for me!

That pizza looks so delicious! I’m putting the ingredients on my list so I can try it this weekend.
I am so excited for the Hunger Games movie! I already find myself getting a little too picky on how things look in them movie (Katniss looks so much older than I imagined!).

P.S. Whenever I try to pin something (like this pizza recipe!) on your blog to pinterest, it always says that it can’t find any photos. Maybe I’m just doing something wrong?

Swanky Dietitian November 17, 2011 at 3:10 am

I did an experiment with this post on pinterest to see if it would work and my pin went through. I am not too sure why it doesn’t work for you. :(
Thanks for wanting to pin! I really appreciate it! :)

Oooh, this looks absolutely delicious! I’m with you…sometimes I’m ok with yogurt & fruit or peanut butter toast for breakfast. But some days, I totally crave something more filling and savory. The only pizza I’ve had for breakfast was leftovers :) .

As far as good books that I couldn’t put down…it’s been awhile. I’m trying to read “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and I can’t seem to get into it.

My book club read that series but I agree with you. I had a difficult time getting into it. I ended up just watching the movies with them. ;)

I am super excited about The Hunger Games movies. I made my boyfriend start reading the books and he’s already on book 2; it’s only been 2 weeks and he’s usually a super slow reader!

Oh, I am loving this. In italy, they cook an egg pizza in the firewood oven with parmesan and basil and I think I ate the whole thing by myself. This looks TO DIE FOR!

Last book I loved? The Paris Wife. I just ordered Girls in White Dresses…heard of it?

I haven’t heard of that book. I just finished up the Hunger Games series last night so I will have to be on the look out for that one. Thanks! :)

I wish I could say I’ve had pizza for breakfast, but leftover cold pizza doesn’t exist in my house. I always find a way to finish it! haha

That pizza looks really good though. I’m not a runny egg fan, but either throwing scrambled eggs on top or opting for only egg whites would make it just right for me.

Where do you get your dough (unless you make it yourself)? It looks perfectly soft! Do you know if it freezes well?

I love reading but after being addicted to Memoirs of a Geisha earlier this semester I realized that I really can’t allow myself to read for fun unless I have a break from school, because when it comes between reading either fiction or a textbook, I think you know which one I would choose!

I happened to be picking up a couple things at Whole Foods and ended up getting their dough since my regular grocery store was out of whole wheat. The man working told me they make it fresh in their bakery. It was delicious! Wish I could shop there more!! :)

the hunger games!!! my favorite book series, ever! honestly, tell me the ending doesn’t just blow your mind. the entire series has a progression of events unlike any other! i am SO excited about the movie, also. i was worried about the castings and the direction – but i am expecting it to be amazing.

as for pizza for breakfast, yum! being gluten free it’s definitely been a difficult time searching for good gluten free pizza. i must say, though, i made a bbq pineapple chicken pizza not to long ago with bob’s red mill homemade pizza crust and it was fantastic. usually gluten free breads and bakery items tend to be gritty or overly dry and spongy – but this came out just right! i’d have eaten it for breakfast the morning after if my roommates hadn’t eaten all the leftovers that night!
(:

Yes, I really love who they cast so far! March seems so far away!!
I have heard Bob’s Red Mill gluten free products are good! Glad you found a good substitute!!
Thanks for stopping by, Kyrstin!
