Cupcakes and Milkshakes

July 17, 2011

Hi!  This weekend more than made up for my last couple low key ones.  So much to share!

The weekend started by cashing in a groupon for a cupcake decorating class at Castle of Cakes

Unfortunately my mom wasn’t able to join me, so I flew solo.

IMG_3956

After getting settled, the group got started by mixing up the frosting.

IMG_3960

The teacher then showed the us how to assemble the bags for decorating.  We were then ready to decorate…well practice decorating!

We used cardboard to practice.  We experimented with different patterns and tips.

The last hour of class was spent decorating the cupcakes.  We had lemon and red velvet cakes.  They smelled amazing.  Fresh out of the oven.

Here is one of my favorites!

IMG_4019

As you can see below….it’s a lot more difficult than it looks.

IMG_4023

Although the class was fun, I don’t think I would have paid full price.  I just didn’t feel there was too much to take away from it.  I was hoping to use what I learned to make fancy cupcakes for my friend’s bridal shower next weekend.  There still may be hope…just have to stick to a really simple design.

Later that evening…

I met my friend (and roomie) for her bachelorette night.  She decided on dinner at Buca Di Beppo.  Don’t think any of us minded that! Open-mouthed smile

IMG_4034

We picked out a salad, appetizer, and two entrees.  Their servings are ginormous and even with 8 of us, we still had leftovers.

Caesar Salad

Fresh, crisp romaine lettuce tossed with our Caesar salad dressing and roasted garlic croutons, topped with Parmesan cheese.

IMG_4035

I had two servings of salad and a couple bites of calamari.  Yum!

IMG_4039

Cheese Manicotti

Pasta tubes stuffed with a rich blend of ricotta, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, topped with creamy Alfredo sauce on a bed of homemade marinara sauce.

IMG_4040

Penne San Remo

Tender chicken breast, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes and peas tossed with imported Italian penne pasta in a white wine cream sauce.

IMG_4041

Everything was delicious! I especially loved the manicotti.  To this day, my (Italian) mom makes manicotti at special occasions.  I will say, this dish was just as good as hers!

IMG_4044

Group shot!  The Bride-To-Be is on the right of me. Open-mouthed smile

IMG_4050

After dinner, we headed over to the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace to have dessert at Max Brenner.  I was too excited!  This is my kind of bachelorette party!

IMG_4052

IMG_4066

The inside of the restaurant had a dark, café feel to it.  I loved the décor.

IMG_4078

IMG_4079

Once the menu arrived, I took some time to decide…fondue, tiramisu, sundae, milkshake.  Too many delicious choices.

IMG_4073

After going back and forth between options, I went with the Butterscotch Chocolate Cream Milkshake.

This milk shake was a combination of dulce de leche ice cream, toffee sauce, pure milk chocolate.

IMG_4085

This was worth every. single. calorie.

IMG_4087

While enjoying our desserts, we played a bachelorette game app on my phone.  There was questions that included dares (trying to get a guy’s attention while picking your nose), charades, and Q & A.  Who would have guessed it would’ve been so much fun!  Well worth the 99 cents.

IMG_4074

In the midst of all the fun this weekend, I went to two great body pump classes.  I knew I probably should have taken a rest day, but was in the mood for some weights!  I am sore already! Smile

Thanks for reading!

How was your weekend?  What’s your favorite or last bachelorette experience?

I’ve never heard of a groupon for cupcake making. I need to keep my eyes open for some in my area. Even if you didn’t get to learn anything very fancy, it looks like you had a great time!

Looks like fun! I’ve only had one bachelorette experience and it was cut short when we were escorted out of the club d/t the bride to be getting sick in the trash can =/ but it was a fun night! This weekend flew by and went to fast!

I’ve heard Max Brenner is fun. I have been meaning to take my kids. My weekend was good, we were away so it was fun to try new places. I have to say I adore calamari. Yum. Cute friends you have!

I think you need more than just one class to get the cake decorating down. For an easy but polished cupcake, get yourself a 1M tip and pipe a swirl of icing. works for me everytime!

Ok great! I’ll see if my mom has this tip! Thanks!

Fun to play with frosting! I’ve been in the same boat, re: cupcakes—I want to take a decorating class, but I haven’t found one that’s going to give me what I want yet. For a discount, however, I could see the allure…

I LOVE MAX BRENNER!! We have them here in NYC and if the 3 year old is ever crotchety, it is an INSTANT success!!

FUN!!! Looks like a great girls night! And yay you for going to the decorating class!!! Simple design or not, the people who get to eat the cupcakes you make for the shower will be lucky women indeed!!! Have a great day!

Whoah, nice job on the leaf-shaped icing! I think if I learned to do that, I would be putting decorative icing on everything I ate, haha.

Also, I love that you practice the everything-in-moderation ‘rule’ and that you have no problem enjoying an awesome dessert that is, as you said, worth every single calorie. I think that letting ourselves enjoy a worthwhile treat every now & then is such a key element of healthy eating (one that I’m still trying to be less hard on myself about), and am glad you seem to agree!

I definitely can be hard on myself at times. But like you said, it’s important to enjoy an occasional treat. It was a very indulgent evening, but I got right back on track the next day. :)

mmm I haven’t been to Buca in a loooon time! Looks yum!! I am not a huge fan of bachelorette parties. The best one was probably my own though!! Free drinks, lots of attention, good times with close friends :)

I’m glad you had fun cupcake decorating – I love the cupcake song! Your cupcake with the pink and blue frosting is gorgeous :)

That milkshake looks out of this world (and definitely worth every calorie ;) ). My fav bachelorette party was my own – some cookie decorating, games, dancing to a workout video (really), and a little bar action :)

Have a great week, Kristen!

I love cooking classes. You looked like you had an AWESOME time! Wow. Super fun….but my favorite part of your weekend was your milkshake…reminds me of that song, “my milkshake brings all the boys to the bars….”

Trying to get a guy’s attention while picking your nose…haha, I love it! Who knew such fun apps were out there? :)

That milkshake is not helping my sugar cravings today! And there’s a HUGE box of chocolate cookies in the break room that keep calling my name as is!

P.S. I think your cupcake rocked! What a fun groupon, even if it wasn’t worth the full price. ;)

What a fun day! I really suck at decorating so I definitely need that class you went to.

My husband and I enjoy Bucca occasionally, but we usually always just share a Margherita pizza. We’ve had a few other things there, but nothing that you and your friends had so it’s good to see pictures of them and hear how they were.

That butterscotch chocolate milkshake sounds amazing! :)
