My Second Birthday + Book Club

March 27, 2011

Hi all!  I had the best weekend!  It was filled with lots of great girl time which always puts a smile on my face.

Saturday

We had our monthly book club meeting.  I am happy to report that I actually finished the book!  You know my track record hasn’t been too great. Embarrassed smile

I just loved our book club read, Angela’s Ashes, by Frank McCourt.

The book is a memoir retelling Frank McCourt’s impoverished childhood and early adulthood in Brooklyn, New York and Limerick, Ireland, as well as McCourt’s struggles with poverty, his father’s drinking issues, and his mother’s attempts of keeping the family alive.  source

We had an amazing array of goodies!

I had the most delicious plate.

After chatting about the book (as well as completely unrelated girl chat), we watched the movie.  We added the commentary by Frank McCourt during the movie, which gave even better insight into his life.

After book club, I got ready to go out.  Some girlfriend’s planned a belated birthday dinner for me at Lolita’s Cantina

IMG_1642

They brought us warm chips, salsa, and bean dip.  I loved the bean dip!  We went through two bowls of chips during dinner. Smile

I ordered a mango margarita on the rocks.  Margaritas are my downfall!

My friend and I (from all the snacking at book club) decided to spilt our meal.  We started with the panucho.

Little empanadas of fresh corn masa stuffed with local cheeses & shredded chicken, topped with black bean crema & pico de gallo

IMG_1647

We also split the steak salad

The food was good but the service was still so-so comparing to the last time I went.

I just love girls night!

After dinner, we had a few drinks at Blue Martini.  I ordered the Pomerita which was excellent!

Herradura Silver Tequila, Pomegranate Liqueur, Cointreau, Sour Mix

Don’t you just feel so fancy drinking a martini!?!  Winking smile

Sunday

My mom, aunt, and I spent the afternoon doing a little shopping at the Fashion Outlet Mall at Primm (located at the state line between NV and CA).

This outlet mall has some great stores, including a Williams Sonoma Marketplace!

I was in heaven!

We had such a nice time and I have to say I made out pretty well!  I got a cardi, jean shorts, dish soap, hand soap, and a pot holder.

I am trying to get some stuff done around the house before work tomorrow.  Gotta love Sundays!

Thanks for reading!

How was your weekend?  What is your favorite outlet store?

I have never read Angela’s Ashes but it sounds like an amazing book – similar to a Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

I love outlet shopping – pretty much any cooking store is my fave!

Happy Birthday! Sounds like you had a wonderful weekend. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog :-) . I read Angela’s Ashes many years ago and loved it. Also spent many hours shopping in Las Vegas when I used to travel there for work. That was before kids….Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

What a fun weekend! The food at your book club looks so delicious! Looks like you had a wonderful time with your girls! That’s always the best. I spent my weekend celebrating a friend’s birthday with Italian food and bowling. And then Saturday was a full cleaning day. I found my camera in the process too!

I have to say that Banana Republic outlet is my favorite!

What a fun weekend! Margaritas are my downfall, too :) So delicious! And mango? Can’t say no to one of those!!

I didn’t know Angela’s Ashes was made into a movie. I feel so out of the loop! I read that book a long time ago…loved it. Now I want to see the movie!

Have a great week, Kristen! I’m heading to Vegas on Thursday. Unfortunately, it’s a family fun-packed weekend but I hope to come back soon and hopefully we can meet-up finally!!! :)

You had one of my ideal weekends – girls night out combined with shopping the next day! One of my favorite outlet stores would have to be Banana Republic. I always find something I like!

Wow looks like you had a wonderful time. I wish someone here would have a book club, but they do not and I dont know enough people to start my own. I am always jealous when I see yours though. That outlet mall sounds absolutely fabulous!
