Belated Birthday

June 6, 2010

Here comes the heat.  It was 102 degrees today.  I am not ready for this weather.  It is just horrible.  So trying to make the best of it, I went to the pool.  More on that later.

Last night, I went out for Kristen’s belated birthday celebration.  Since Kristen hadn’t been to Firefly, we decided it would be a good time to go.  Vegas has two locations, one of which is downtown on the strip.  I prefer the location we went to on Friday.  It is smaller and has a more intimate feel.

We had to start off with some sangria.

It was so refreshing.  Their sangria is the BEST!

Then also served a plate of bread with a flavored butter.

We decided to all order something so that we could all share.  I started off with Stuffed Dates.

Bacon-wrapped, smoked almond, red wine reduction, blue cheese

This dish was amazing!  The dates just bursted with flavor and I loved the taste of the blue cheese with the wine reduction.  Super yum!

My sister ordered Chicken and Chorizo Mushrooms

They were also delicious!

One of Kristen’s friends’ ordered octopus.  Since I am all about trying anything at least once, I gave it a whirl.  It was not too bad but just the idea of the tentacles kind of weirded me out.

After dinner, we headed to the Hard Rock Hotel to go to a club called Vanity.  We had to have a shot with the birthday girl before heading into the club.  Tequila!!

Vanity was fun and we danced all night long!

I am apparently not with the times since I was one of three people who had jeans on in the club.  It was all about the dresses.  I guess now I know.

Saturday

My other friend was staying at the Golden Nugget for her boyfriend’s birthday.  I decided to join them at the pool.  The pool is called H2O and is super neat.

Since we were enjoying the sun, and lounging by the pool, I thought a fruity drink was in order.

IMG_4175

May I remind you that this is my absolute favorite thing to do in the summer.  Lay by the pool and sip a fruity drink.  This was a slushy pink lemonade drink with vodka.

On my way home from the pool, I stopped at the grocery store.  When about to leave, my car didn’t start.  My battery was totally dead.  Thankfully my sister and AAA came to the rescue.  Glad I wasn’t stuck downtown at the Golden Nugget though.  Could have been worse.

Trying to get back on track, I went to a body pump class before heading to the pool.  It felt so great to sweat..although I could just step outside in the heat.

Other Swanky Scoop:

  • I tried the Luna Protein bar before my body pump class today.

IMG_4127

Here are the stats:  190 calories, 9 grams fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 3 grams fiber, and 12 grams protein.

IMG_4129

Pros:  I liked that it packs a powerful punch with protein and I really enjoyed the flavor.

Cons:   I did not like how much saturated fat the bar has.  Almost half the fat is saturated.

<
strong>An easy rule of thumb:  When looking at fat, if you subtract total fat from saturated and the result is smaller than the number of grams of saturated fat, it is not a great choice.

Next week, I plan on blogging my eats for the entire week.  I am not making any promises, but I just thought it would be a fun way to really show you a better look into what I eat on a regular basis.

Have a great day!  What is the craziest food you have tried?  Did you end up liking it?

Wow, I wish I could go on a mini vacation like this somewhere here in Ohio! You guys are so close to so many great attractions, even just the pool with the bar makes me happy :)

I love Sangria too, but only the red kind. White is gross to me.

The craziest food I ever tried was ostrich, and yes, I loved it!!

I am glad your car works again! I will not try crazy foods – as you know. The Sangria at the Hard Rock is still #1!!

Looks like a great weekend!
Hum, crazy foods… I guess it depends on what you consider crazy. I love raw oysters! I’ve tried ostrich too and liked it. I recently ordered a squid salad and other people at the table thought it was pretty crazy- I loved it!
