Sun and Sand

May 29, 2010

Greetings from Laguna Beach!  We are having such a wonderful time.  Although the forecast said partly cloudy, we have had only sun!

Breakfast

Before we hit the road, I toasted a slice of sprouted bread and topped it with peanut butter and banana.

We hit the road at about 10:30.  We were hoping to leave a bit earlier but you know how that goes.  Maybe also cause we stopped for a Starbucks.  I had a tall nonfat caramel latte.  Yum!

(My sister was driving for those of you that might have worried I was taking this pic.)

Lunch

One of our new favorite places to stop for lunch is The Mad Greek in Baker, California, a little less than 2 hours from Vegas.  The Mad Greek was featured an on episode on Diners, Drive Ins, and Drives.  Since my sister and I tried it last time, we knew we had to go back.

The restaurant has an eclectic feel to it.

I ordered the gyro for lunch.

The restaurant described the gyro as…

Our favorite sandwich of beef and lamb sliced directly off our rotisserie served with onion and tomatoes on pita bread and cucumber sauce

There is only one word to describe this..delicious!  This place has the best gyros I have ever had.  So good!

Snack

Mid drive, I snacked on some leftover pineapple.  Juicy and delicious!  I wanted to use up as much food as I could at my house.

We got into Laguna Beach around 5 (there was an insane amount of traffic), we checked into our room.  Here is a view from our room.  So close to the ocean!

Since it was such a beautiful and sunny day, we hurried into out swimsuits and down to the ocean.

It was such a perfect day for the beach.

Dinner

We weren’t really sure what we were in the mood for and ended up searching for somewhere to eat for quite a bit.  Finally, we decided on a Thai restaurant, called Thai Brothers, that sounded good.

We started with an order of wontons.  They were filled with cream cheese and avocado.  They had a yummy dipping sauce that went well with the flavors in the wontons.

For my entree, I ordered tofu with vegetables in a spicy peanut sauce.  (sorry I can’t remember the name of the dish).

This dish had so much flavor and I loved the crust on the tofu.  Yum!

I didn’t realize my dish came with rice.  I would have preferred brown rice but you win some, you lose some.  I should have asked.  Either way, this dish was great!  I took the leftovers back to the hotel.  Not sure what I will do with them since we don’t have a microwave.  It was just too good to let waste.

Since a grocery store was in walking distance of the hotel (love it), we picked up the necessities..fruit and WINE.

My sister picked out a Moscato.  Sweet and refreshing.

We are drinking our wine out of plastic cups.  I know, we are classy like that.

I am blogging and listening to the waves.  What a perfect way to end the night.  Hope you enjoyed reading about my travels. There will be more to come tomorrow.

Thanks for reading!  Hope you have a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend!

Are you a spontaneous vacation goer or more of a planner?

Glad you are having a nice trip so far. The tofu dish looks great. Too bad there is no microwave to reheat it. Who knows, it may taste good cold. At least the tofu should taste good cold. Yea for the Mad Greek. I miss that drive. I always wanted to stop at the outlets and I don’t know why seeing as we have outlets in Vegas.

I plan my vacations. I always plan everything. This time I left the planning to my mom and we are headed to Europe in 3 weeks from today!

How silly that sounds to me now that I posted. I live in Europe, duh! But I meant we are heading to mainland Europe, which you probably could have figured out without me telling you.

Hey girl – looks like the vacation is off to a great start. Need details on that wine. I love Barefoot, but haven’t tried that one. Not sure I’ve seen it….

Have fun for me too please!

Like in pretty much every part of my life I am a planner. Once in a while I will do something a bit less planned and usually end up having the best time. :-)

I am definitely a planner, which works out most of the time and sometimes things work out so much better when I just go with the flow and see what happens! Looks like a great trip, so jealous of the weather! We should have stopped at the Mad Greek, I’ve been wanting to try that place.
