Hi guys! How was your weekend?? I had a great weekend, but it flew by so fast. Like I had mentioned, Friday and Saturday I attended Jessica Setnick’s Eating Disorders BootCamp. I was lucky enough to get to attend and learned so much. For any of you that are nutrition professionals, I highly recommend attending this workshop. I think to some degree, all the patients that we see in areas of nutrition have some type of disordered eating..eating too much, not enough, etc. It is helpful to understand this area of eating.
Just to recap, I will share some of the key things she discussed.
There are many contributing factors in eating disorders including environmental factors; cultural as well as the family environment. Examples culturally include focus on physical appearance rather than inner worth as well as visual media. Examples in the family environment include dysfunctional or split families. Genetic components can also play a large role and can include a response to stress as well as having an “addictive personality.”
What triggers people to turn to an eating disorder varies, but can include:
-“dieting”
-death or divorce
-trauma
-comments made regarding weight, etc.
Three needs for recovery include a turning point, a reason to live, and finding your identity without the eating disorder. It is the job not only of a dietitian, but therapist and doctor to help the patient through this process.
I really thought this was an interesting quote. “To professionals, eating disorders seem like a problem…to those suffering, they seem like a solution.
There was so much information geared toward nutrition professionals and I hope I will be able to use these skills I have learned with patients. One of the books she recommended which I would like to check out was called “The Dark Side of the Lightchasers” by Debbie Ford
Included in the workshop, they provided us with breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, I had half a blueberry bagel with fruit.
It was really tasty but didn’t hold me over long. I was missing some much needed protein. When lunch came around, I was starving. Jason’s Deli provided the food and I grabbed a boxed turkey sandwich. It also came with potato chips, pickle, and a cookie. I was so starving that I didn’t even think twice whether or not chips were the best choice, and ate the whole bag. The sandwich was very good but I ended up taking off some of the turkey; they packed it on.
Later on in the afternoon, I went to my friends house. She recently starting hosting Gold Parties, where you sell your gold for cash. Unfortunately, I did not have any gold to sell, but I still came over to visit. There was lots of yummy food at her house. I filled my plate with a turkey sandwich (second today if were keeping count), salad, and endive and cheese appetizers.
It hit the spot. My friend Missy was in town for the weekend, so I left to meet her back at my place. I did what any person would do when someone comes to Vegas..we had frozen yogurt!! Actually she used to live here so she was fine just being low key. I took her to Yogurtland, a self-serve frozen yogurt place right by my house. I got a small serving of Egg Nog.
This has got to be up there in my top favorite flavors. Don’t you just love all the flavors that come out over the holidays. We went back to my house and just chatted for hours. Sometimes you just need your girl time.
I met up with her the next day for lunch before she went back home. We ate lunch at the Yardhouse, a place I frequent quite often. I thought I would try something different, everything I have had on their menu has been really yummy so far.
I ordered the Portabella Burger (eggplant, peppers, basil, feta, sun-dried tomato mayo, on an onion poppyseed bun) It also was served with fries.
What did I think?? It was soo delicious..but very messy. Not a good sandwich to order on a first date. All the veggies kept falling out so I eventually got out a fork and knife. The “burger” was very savory although there was no meat. And the best thing is that I think I can make it at home. I am definitely going to try it out. Check out all the colors…mmmm.
I couldn’t finish it all and left quite a pile of fries. I would have tried taking it home but I think it might have been a bit soggy.
Here is my friend Missy and I. Thanks for coming to visit!!
Although it was a great weekend, I feel that this month with all the holidays and parties, it has been more difficult to keep a healthy balance. Does anyone else feel this way? Do you struggle with healthy eating during t
he holidays?
Have a great week!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!
I do struggle sometimes to eat healthy over the holidays, but I find it’s easier when I keep the alcoholic beverages away! I try to stick to just one drink, and one small “treat”. The rest of the time I stock up on veggies and fruit
That is great advice…you sometimes forget how many calories you consume through drinks.
Thanks for stopping by!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I got the emails, but of course I don’t live there anymore. Love Jason’s deli, there was one right by Sunrise and UNLV.
oh what great training you must have received love it
I would love to be a part of that training. That’s for writing this!
great post! I’ve always wanted to attend that seminar! I will–one day. I feel it’s an area that requires a lot of training and a DI just isn’t enough to learn all there is to know about it. But, let’s face it…we’re always learning
sounds like a great seminar, great info! The holidays are tough because there are just sooo many goodies just sitting there staring you in the face. I try to take a few bites of each and step away from the food table!
